Looking for Alaska by John Green

I chose this book for many reasons. The first reason is that I have two sisters who have previously read this book and gave very good ratings on it and recommended it. The second reason was that we already had this book in our house so there was no reason to go and buy a different book if we already had it. This book was also chosen by many of my peers so I thought it would be good if I read it also. One connection I made after reading this book was that I will probably share a similar college experience with some of these people with pranking my roommates and other kids around campus. I would recommend this book to middle school or high school kids. This is because there are some parts where you have to be mature about the situation at hand. Also, because this book gives them an idea of what their college experience could be like in the future at their college. I would also recommend this book to people who like John Green as an author because this is a very good book written by him and is similar to his other books.

Looking for Alaska by John Green

“Christ! You could have drowned! They’re just supposed to throw you in the water in your underwear and run! What the hell were they thinking! Who was it? Kevin Richman and who else? Do you remember their faces?” (pg. 28).

This is a hook because at this point in the book which is early, you did not expect stuff to happen so quickly. This prank surprises the reader and makes them want to reads more. And once you find out that they weren’t supposed to duct tape him together and just throw him in the lake in his underwear, the reader is shocked and is wondering why they have tapped him together. The Colonel, his roommate, is even surprised which makes us confused as why he wanted them to throw Pudge in the lake and why the people who did it, taped him. This part in the book is a thing that causes many other things to unfold. Once you learn further information that is given like Alaska turning in her roommate, the reader gets sucked into the book and can’t put it down. This is what makes writers like John Green so popular among teenagers.

Looking for Alaska by John Green

The characters in this book are very basic in the beginning but when you read more and more and learn secrets and things about them, they become complex. Miles in the beginning just wants to make friends and fit in and belong to a group of people. He then becomes closer and closer to these people. Miles eventually lets the readers know but not the characters that he likes Alaska. He wants to be with her all the time and he even stays home on Thanksgiving break to be with her. Chip seems very tough and cool in the beginning but once Miles gets closer to him, they become really good friends and Miles learns about the softer side that Chip has. Alaska is like a puzzle to Miles. One moment she is crazy and drinking alcohol and the next she is crying over being lonely and not seeing her boyfriend. Alaska likes to have fun and prank people but sometimes she can go too far with the pranks. There are a few themes that have appeared to far in this book. One is a person’s actions can hurt more than just themselves. Another is the people a person spends the most time with is whom they most closely resemble. This book is structured with lots of dialogue but also lots of Miles thoughts.

Looking for Alaska by John Green

I chose the book Looking for Alaska by John Green to read for my English summer assignment. There are three major characters in this book but there are two others that play a role in this book. The first major character is Miles “Pudge” Halter. The book is told from his point of view and is his thoughts are given in the text. Miles is from the Orlando area in Florida. He is a skinny kid who is also tall. His dad also went to this boarding school when he was Miles age. The next major character in this book is Chip “Colonel” Martin. Chip is Miles new roommate at boarding school. Chip is from south of Birmingham, Alabama where he lives with his mom. His dad lives out in California. The last major character in the book is Alaska Young. Alaska Young is from Vine Station, Alabama. She lived with her dad but her mom died when she was seven. These three characters all meet up at Culver Creek boarding school in Birmingham, Alabama. The school is not very big but normal college stuff happens during the school year. The year before, Alaska’s roommate get expelled because someone ratted her out about what she was doing like drugs. People blamed Colonel for doing it but it wasn’t him. A prank war has erupted between the three major characters and the people who have been blaming them. I think that one of the pranks is going to go too far and Alaska is going to disappear. This book has a very similar plot to The Fault in our Stars by John Green also.

Review about the book

At the end of the last book, Percy and Anna Beth got seperated sepparated from the rest of the group. Tnis caused some seriuos issues. Now there is another problem. Monsters are now dying but coming back to the real world right away. They figure out that the doors of death are open. So their new goal is to close them from both sides. But do they complete their overall goal? The type of reader that would enjoy this book is someone who likes how Rick Riordan writes. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

There are so many possibilities for what could happen. A lot has already happened so far. But there is one thing that I think is going to happen. I think that one of the main characters is going to die. I think that they will die doing something heroic. Because I mean come on, why would an author kill a person off if its a stupid death. I also think that all the characters will achieve their main goal. But some complication is going to come up and cause trouble.

The setting of the novel is in the Atlantic Ocean, America, and the underworld. The book starts out in Italy but quickly moves to the Atlantic Ocean. There it just talks about the blue sea and monsters that they encounter. But then they arrive in America. There they quickly move across the US to accomplish their main goal. But the other half of the story is in the underworld with Percy and Annabeth. There they try to accomplish a similar goal to the others. But their goal is different in a miniture way.

Write a post about the vocabulary in your book

The vocabulary in my book is very casual. The vocabulary is easy to understand. Even a third grader could understand what is written in the book. I wish that the author Rick Riordan would use some more elevated vocabulary throughout the book. Although the reading level is for younger kids, he could still make the vocabulary more elevated. Rick Riordan uses his low vocabulary as an advantage. Kids are able to understand the language. But he uses good wording while using this vocbaulary.

Why do you think the author wrote this work

I am reading the book the House of Hades. I believe that Rick Riordan wrote this book to entertain. I think this is because this book is not to persuade you to do something. Its not telling you to go and do something after reading this book. It also does not inform the reader. It may inform you about Greek gods and the different myths. But it isn't giving you factual information about the events in the book. For example, Percy Jackson fighting Greek gods, is not factual, it isn't real. The book is to entertain you. It is to make you keep reading and make you think and make you happy or sad or feel emotions.

This article talks about how kids should play with Legos. It shows the various reasons why they should including self confidence. "With Legos, kids build sturdy little creations – which, in turn, build sturdy kids." This line has a big impact on the reader. A lot of times when someone has to read an article, they kind of skim the article picking out the important facts. The reader picks out the things they think are important when skimming. The quote above is the last line in the article. Now if I'm the reader, I'm going to think this is important. This quote summarizes the whole article and why she wrote it. If I am going to read her articles, I am going to read the last line to see what it is about. I think that the author's style in very easy going or laid back. A quote to support this is,"In the end, that's the magic of these polymer bricks whose funny name is a Danish contraction for 'play well.'" I was wondering when you first realized that you were good at write? Also, when did you realized that you wanted to write for your career? Lastly, do you have kids that give you your ideas?

How has the character changed since they were first introduced

I have chosen Percy Jackson to explain how he has changed. Percy was first introduced in the Percy Jackson series but also is in this series. Percy, when first introduced was kind of shy and timid. He was also very insecure about himself. But since then he has changed a good amount. As the books went on he learned about himself and became more secure. He learned that other people that he didn't like and their views, they didn't matter to him. Now in this series he has become more valient with how he feels and he expresses himself better around others. He has become a leader in the way that he has changed. An example of this is, "Percy tried to ignore them and staggered toward Annabeth, determined to go down defending her if he had to..." (Riordan 110). This displays how he has become a leader over time. Percy now is willing to die for his friend without hesitation. Where as before, he would of hesitated and maybe not of died for her in the same situation.

Eplain why you chose the book you did

I decided to explain why I chose the book House of Hades. The very main reason I chose it was it is in a series that I had started reading. The three books before this were written by the same offer and were very good. They had great detail and good conflict. But they did have the same problems as this one does with the changing of perspectives. The were some side reasons I chose this book too. The author, Rick Riordan, also wrote the book the Lightning Thief, which is one of my favorite books of all time. It has some of the same characters in it as the book I'm reading does. Another reason is that one of my friends had recommended it to me to read after I read the Lightning Thief. Those were the reasons I chose this book.

The worst thing about my book is...

The worst thing about my book is that at the beginning of most of the chapters, it changes perspective to another person. This is a problem because there is two real main conflicts between Percy and Annabeth being stuck somewhere else other than the rest of the characters. This is a problem because I got really into a chapter and then it ended. So normally the conflict would pick up right after in the next chapter. Wrong. The next chapter went into the situation and now I have to read more before I can find out what happened. Now sometimes this can be a good thing. When there is nothing going on in one area of the story, it will change over into the other and then the book will pick back up. But then the chapter will end and you might not know what will happen for a few chapters. This leads to frustration and questioning of the author.

Describe how the different characters deal with the main conflict in the novel

Different characters deal with the conflict differently than others. For example, Percy is more optimistic about the situation than Annabeth. Percy is super nice and thinks about all the good things that could come out of the situation. Annabeth however, thinks about the bad and the possible death or how they could get seperated. Hazel and Jason are both in different situations than Percy and Annabeth. Hazel thinks about situations just like Percy and is optimistic. Jason is like Annabeth and thinks about all the bad things and is pestimistic. Although the characters have different problems, some have the same attitude.
